Ride it out
Urges peak and pass, usually within 15–20 minutes. You just have to outlast this one.

- 1Delay 20 minutes. Don't decide "no" forever — just decide "not this minute." Most urges fade before the timer runs out.
- 2Swap the ritual. If it's the sitting-down-with-a-drink moment you want, get a cold sparkling water or NA beer in the same glass.
- 3Name what triggered it — stress, boredom, habit, a specific person or place. Naming it usually loosens its grip.
- 4Move your body for two minutes. A short walk, stretch, or even pacing changes the physical urge faster than willpower does.
- 5Text or call someone who knows you're cutting back. Saying it out loud to another person makes it real and harder to slide past.
- 6Remember tomorrow-you. Picture how you'll feel in the morning if tonight is a no-drink night — most people say lighter, not deprived.
